![]() ![]() Pour over the top of the green bean mixture. Simmer and stir frequently until smooth, creamy, and thickened. Now whisk in the chicken broth and half and half alternating between the two. Then whisk in the salt, black pepper, and nutmeg. Whisk in the flour and continue cooking for about 2 minutes while whisking very frequently. Now add enough butter to the skillet to make up to 3 tablespoons of fat. Using a slotted spoon remove the mixture and put it in the baking dish with the green beans. Now reduce the heat and add the garlic cooking for 1 minute while stirring continuously. Then continue cooking until the bacon is crisp and the mushrooms are browned. After a couple of minutes add the sliced mushrooms. Then start frying your chopped bacon in a large pan over medium heat. Once drained spread in the bottom of a baking dish. Once chilled drain in a colander in the sink. Plunge into ice-cold water to stop the cooking process. Add the trimmed green beans and simmer for about 3-4 minutes. It takes a little more time and effort but the end result is so tasty that you will never make it any other way. We love to serve this classic holiday side dish for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
